My friend is thinking about buying the Series II off-road package. He wants to know if the 3.92 or 3.21 gear ratio is better for highway driving when he isn't towing. He's just looking for a comfortable car to take on long trips with his family. Will the 3.92 gear ratio cause an issue on the highway?

When you're picking a ratio, just think about what really matters to you. If you’re all about stretching your range and cruising easy on the highway, go with a 3.21 ratio. But if you’re into towing, hauling, or getting off the beaten path, a 3.92 ratio will give you the extra oomph you need. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between energy efficiency and getting the performance you want, depending on how you roll.

If you don't intend to use your Jeep for serious off-roading, gear ratio isn't as important. The Wagoneer has enough torque to handle towing. Either 3.92 or 3.21 gear ratio would be enough.

Honestly, he's gotta drive both. Tell him to get behind the wheel and take 'em both for a spin on the highway. That's the only way he'll really know the difference. Sometimes it's just about what feels right. But for comfort, I'm betting he'll like the 3.21 better
