So I've got this Wagoneer SIII and it's got a trailer brake controller built-in, but there's no switch for me to mess with. Apparently, it kicks in automatically when the trailer's plugged in. But here's the thing - I'm totally clueless about how to tweak or test the trailer brake before hitting the road. Am I missing some secret setting here? How the heck do I make adjustments if there's no switch?

Also, I'm thinking about grabbing an aftermarket trailer brake controller, but I haven't got a clue where to snag one. And to top it off, there's no spot on my dash for it either. Any of you got any tips or tricks to share?

Your SIII already has the wiring in place for a trailer brake controller, which is an important component of the system. To be sure that your SIII is ready to haul trailers with brakes, look for a trailer brake module in the dashboard. If it's missing, you'll need to have it installed.

Every vehicle I've owned with a brake controller has had a physical controller inside the cabin for adjusting brake settings and a squeeze bar for manually engaging the trailer brakes. If your SIII already has a brake controller, it's strange that some models offer it as an option. It doesn't make sense to include it as standard on some vehicles but offer it as an add-on on others. I agree with @diwata, you'll have to have it installed if missing.

I'm using REDARC on my Tacoma. I tried to put it where the cigarette lighter was, but the trim plate they recommended didn't fit since it was for a smaller hole. I made a new plate to fit, but I also contacted them, and they were very helpful in sending me a different trim plate. I swapped them out, and it looks good, but it doesn't sit flat against the dash, so I'll leave it that way. I haven't even tried the controller yet though.

I'm not sure if they make one for the Wagoneer.

I feel your frustration because I have been there. I used a diagnostic tool to check if the brake controller was functioning properly when the trailer was plugged in.

I wanted to be sure everything was set up right before hitting the road. As for the aftermarket options, go for Tekonsha with all the trust you have.
